GMRT Observations Question Decades-Long Understanding of Gamma Ray Bursts - 28/03/2023

On Sunday, Oct. 9, 2022, a pulse of intense gamma-ray radiation swept through our solar system, saturating detectors on numerous spacecraft, and sending astronomers across the world scurrying to train the fastest and most powerful telescopes on it. The new source, dubbed GRB 221009A, turned out to be the brightest gamma-ray burst (GRB) ever observed.

Novel techniques enable GMRT to discover new pulsars for probing Gravitational Waves - 06-06-2023

Using a novel technique of ''gated imaging'', a team of scientists led by a PhD student Mr Shyam Sunder working under Dr Jayanta Roy at NCRA-TIFR have identified precise locations of two new Millisecond Pulsars (MSPs). The novel "gating imaging" technique significantly accelerates the process of measuring pulsar parameters with higher precision compared to the standard analysis technique. The new MSPs discovered and precisely localized using GMRT will add to the international programs in their search for the imprint of the Gravitational Wave background.

Hint for relentless humming of universe by low frequency gravitational waves - 29-June-2023

An International team of astronomers from India, Japan and Europe has published the results from monitoring pulsars, nature’s best clocks, using six of the World's most sensitive radio telescopes, including India’s largest telescope uGMRT. These results provide a hint of evidence for the relentless vibrations of the fabric of the universe, caused by ultra-low frequency gravitational waves.

Astronomers detect traveling Ionospheric disturbances using the GMRT. 20/10/2023

The ionosphere is a part of the upper atmosphere of the Earth, lying between 80 and 600 km. It gets its name from the fact that the solar extreme ultraviolet and X-rays ionise the atoms and molecules present at these heights leading to a layer which has ions and electrons. Though it sits far above the clouds, it plays a surprisingly important role in our daily lives.

India joins the global hunt for Gravitational Waves (GW) from monster black holes

A consortium of mainly Indian researchers under the banner “Indian Pulsar Timing Array (InPTA)”, became a full member of the “International Pulsar Timing Array (IPTA)” , an international effort to discover and study very low-frequency gravitational waves from supermassive binary black holes orbiting each other. InPTA regularly employs the upgraded Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (uGMRT), situated near Pune to monitor pulsars to obtain high precision timing measurements. The unique frequency range of the uGMRT, 300 - 800 MHz is not covered by other big telescopes used by IPTA, therefore the inclusion of uGMRT is crucial in improving the precision of IPTA to detect nano-hertz GWs.
